Unfortunately, the owner of the signature breakfast and brunch spot has made the difficult decision to close for good. Melissa Donati was almost without words when she announced that Willow Rest would be shutting down on Wednesday, May 31.
"I really do not know what to say except I am sorry. Sorry because I loved our store. I loved our customers," she wrote in a Facebook post.
"The staffing issues have taken a toll on me my husband and my mental health. Impossible to run a business properly and take care of our customers," Donati continued. "It has been an incredible 13 plus years and I am so thankful for everything and everyone."
Willow Rest has been "the singular out post on the Riverdale/Annisquam side of Cape Ann for a bite to eat, or a tank of gas," the restaurant's website reads. Donati was credited with revitalizing the space in 2009 and providing an even more encompassing experience for locals and visitors.
"The Willow Rest is considered by neighbors, visitors and foodies from all over the North Shore to be their home away from home," the website reads. "Please consider it yours as well."
Patrons were equally as heartbroken by the news of Willow's last day, with many taking to the comments section of Donati's post.
"Melissa, you know Willow Rest was my absolute favorite spot on the Cape," one person wrote. "Thank you for all your hard work and dedication over the years. I hope you and your husband can rest, recuperate, and regain your health!"
"You’re going to be very missed on the island," another person wrote. "I know you’ve worked incredibly hard to make it work and you created a spectacular resource for the community. I’m sure you are more than heartbroken."
